A native of Costa Rica, Dr. Manuel Matarrita was the winner of the prestigious National Music Award in his country in 2012. He has appeared as a soloist and accompanist in Costa Rica and around the world, with appearances in Spain, Serbia, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador, Perú, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba and the US. Since 2008, he has been one of the official pianists of the International Voice Competition, “Ciudad de Trujillo,” in Perú.
Mr. Matarrita recently released a recording entitled “Una milpa y buenos güeyes,” which includes piano music by several Costa Rican composers. He is also the featured soloist on the first recording of Colombian composer Luis Carlos Figueroa´s “Concerto for Piano and Orchestra,” released in July 2014. Mr. Matarrita performed the world premiere of Jerry Sieg´s “Toccata for Piano and Strings” in 2010, as well as of Sergio Delgado´s “Fantasia Desconcertante for Piano and Chamber Orchestra” in July of this year.
Both a renown performer and teacher, Mr. Matarrita was a featured soloist and clinician at the Sixth World Piano Conference in Novi Sad, Serbia in June of 2014. He holds degrees in Piano Performance from the University of Costa Rica, the University of New Orleans, and Louisiana State University. He is a Professor of Piano at the University of Costa Rica, currently serving as the Director of the School of Music. Mr. Matarrita is also a member of the World Piano Teachers Association, as well as one of the Board of Directors of the María Clara Cullell International Piano Competition.
